allowed the democratic controlled senate to lead our economy to the edge of the fiscal cliff. congress people from both parties are searching for a bipartisan solution. that is the leadership that america needs, not what we saw from the president this morning ." those of the comments from speaker boehner. the house has gaveled out. we expect them back in about two hours. let's go to newbury port. caller: thank you for c-span. i do not understand where this $250,000 number comes from. i am 70 and have never been asked to make a sacrifice by any congress. it just seems to me that if the average income in most states -- to ask people making $125,000 or more, to ask them to contribute more, that seems to be a no- brainer. i do not see why people in this country are not ready to make a compromise. let's face it, we will either all have to pay slightly more taxes and accept the fact that our benefits are going to have to be lower than they really are -- i am in that bracket of $125,000 to $250,000. i am very comfortable, i could contribute more to the deficit, i just want to make sure that that money goes to the deficit in reality. it seems to me that that number comes up and is a political situation and what congress is really saying is that i am going

measures related to the fiscal cliff. as we've been reported, the senate won't tonight either. although they're talking and we expect them to come back tomorrow morning at 11:00. as we all know from past battles, today's fiscal cliff fight is, sadly, typical. in fact, this congress is on track to go down as the least productive congress since recordkeeping began. in the course of nearly two years, the 112th congress has passed 219 bills that have actually been signed into law by president obama. but a lot of these laws were insignificant, things like the names of post offices. and a slew of bills passed by the house had no chance of passing the senate or getting the president's signature, like repeated attempts to repeal the affordable care act. the influence of the tea party lawmakers have been a clear factor. >> the tea party, which is not even on the screen about a year ago at this time, is a very domineering force. >> one story will be with us, the rise of the tea party. >> regardless of what those elites think, the tea party movement is authentic, grassroots movement. >> i wouldn't sell short these candidates. >> tea party americans, you're winning

hill as lawmakers try to work out and vote on a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff. both houses of congress are meeting in a rather sunday session. the senate convenes aat 1:00 eastern and the house at 2:00. our chief white house correspondent jessica yellen with the look at the chances for a deal and what's on the table. >> here in washington there is still hope a deal can be cut in time to avert the fiscal cliff. on saturday the president was at work here in the white house, but all eyes were on the senate where negotiators were trading deal points and revenue figures to try to reach an agreement all sides can stomach. the baseline for the president, any bipartisan bill has to extend unemployment insurance that would affect some 2 million americans, and increase taxes for the highest income earners. negotiators can still work out exactly where that tax increase would hit and whether they would halt an increase in the estate tax. in case those discussions break down, the president has asked democratic leader harry reid to prepare a separate bill to put on the floor of the senate t

. time is nearly up before we go over the so-called fiscal cliff. senate leaders spent the weekend working on a last-ditch deal, and the house comes back for a rare sunday night session. yesterday afternoon in an exclusive interview, president obama sat down with me in the blue room of the white house to discuss the way forward and his priorities for a second term. >>> mr. president, welcome back to "meet the press." >> great to be here. thank you. >> the obvious question, are we going to go over the fiscal cliff? >> we'll find out in the next 48 hours what congress will decide to do. but i think it's important for the american people to understand exactly what this fiscal cliff is. it's actually not that complicated. the tax cuts that were introduced in 2001, 2003, 2010, those were extended, and they are all about to expire at the end of the year. so on midnight december 31, if congress doesn't act, then everybody's taxes go up. and for the average family, that could mean a loss of $2,000 in income. for the entire economy, that means consumers have a lot less money to make purchas

. as we reported before the commercial break, senate majority leader harry reid says no fiscal cliff vote planned for tonight because the democrats have not been able to come up with a counter offer. they're arguing amongst themself, the senate plans to be back at 11:00 a.m. eastern tomorrow morning. but they're still in their offices with their staff. they're tending to other business we're told while we wait. we want to bring in susan, the chief congressional correspondent for the washington examiner. we've heard -- first, what do the republicans want? >> they'd like a bill that keeps taxes low for all income earners. they're not going to to go that to they want to keep the threshold as high as possible. president obama initially suggested $250,000 or above should see an increase. that number will probably be maybe 400,000, 500 thousands, but republicans want to see spending cuts. today they talked about changing the way social security benefits would be administered over time and save money, entitlement reform. that's off the table so republicans are saying where are we going off spending cuts? there's a hangup there. democrats on the other hand looking for a way to keep taxes for high for the higher income earners. instead of $400,000 they would like to lower that to $250,000 or a
